Walkable streets are safe and attractive to people with less consumption of land and fewer cars, making city livable, friendly and healthy, reducing carbon emissions, and promote the creation of low-carbon settlements. Mobile data are useful pointers for tracking smart mobility.

Cities of the 21st century must be planned as walkable with affordable means of public transport and public transit  in order to safeguard the environment while creating economic growth. Real-time information is needed to support inclusive participatory mobility policies and planning.

Cities with high quality of life associated with health and safety are those where their citizens enjoy public spaces, green spaces and walkable streets.

By promoting green public spaces, prosperous streets contribute to the reduction of

air and water pollution and to the preservation of biodiversity. Air quality monitoring is key element of a smart urban observatory

Promoting sustainable land use,  adequate densities and compactness to prevent and contain urban sprawl. Adequate housing and security of tenure for all; Streets and public spaces for all requires sound urban observatories.

Coastal cities are threatened by climate change, land degradation and loss of biodiversity. They are exposed to rising sea levels, to natural hazards such as increased storm surges, floods and windstorms.Planning, designing and managing coastal cities for  climate resilience  require sound smart urban observatories.

Safeguard and promote cultural infra-structures and sites, museums, indigenous cultures and languages, etc.Planning & managing cities for cultural and natural heritage preservation, protection and conservation requires sound smart urban observatories
